Transparent things came with the novel written by Vladimir Nabokov in 1972.

Chapter one has been materialized into an exhibition, talking about our relationship to objects, that mediation of the past and their place in our fantasies and projections.

For many of the works, reading is an act and language is a material essential that surfaces can be read like sentences variously impenetrable or seductive, transparent or opaque.

Vladimir Nabokov—argyognomon, ismenias. Butterfly Drawings of wings, 1966. He collected butterfly specimens throughout his life and drawn them. He inspired Carrie Tribe and Michael Dean. The exhibition has been organized much like a butterfly's wing with repeated motifs and visual connections linking works across different floors of the building.

Becky Beasley — Bearings V., 2020. Her work bearings five spins overhead, like a compass at a loss. The work is a brass cast of sticks gathered after a storm, so that can be packed into a suitcase.

Becky Beasley— Astray (DAM) 2008. Collusion the form of an ashtray with text.

Renee So — Eye of the Beholder, 2020. Anthropomorphic theme

Michael Dean — Ffffffff (cursive), 2020. It is a repeated letter “F” painted with a paperback book across the gallery windows in a struggle between paint and gesture. It catches the light and laughs at its own ineptness.

Michael Dean — (unfucking titled) fucked dove/pigeon, 2020. Cheaply materials were tight and welded together, that suggests a landed bird with stained and ragged feathers.

Lucy Skaer — Blue window, 2017.

Gareth Cadwallader — Coffee, 2018-2019. A perfect moment in time and interaction between man and object.

David Hammons — Untitled (basketball Drawing + Stone), 2006. The resulting image traces an absent object. The basketball attests to the position of black male bodies and white US culture, performing a sanctioned visibility in the arenas of entertainment and sport. The rock the drawing stays on refers to the slang term for the basketball itself.

Becky Beasley — Literary Green, 2009. The work shows an imagined space of fiction changed into real space, playing on double images, obstructions, two and three dimensions, reflections and formal echoes.

Nina Canell — Background, 2019. A shortwave radio receiver is surrounded by glasses containing the lowest density material in the world

Kerry Tribe — Parnassius Mesonyme, 2010. An animated image of a butterfly seen under a microscope.

Virginia Overton — Cascade, 2020. The liquid connection between obstructed letters suggests the flow of a sentence or poetry.

Marie Lund — Stills, 2013.

Michael Dean — Seen Capacity for feeling where feelings appear nowhere (working title) and breaking aching, 2020. Concrete is central in Dean's work as a democratic ceramic, cheaply available and quick to render. The liquidity of the concrete pour is palpable, despite its solidification

Nina Canell — Gum shelves, 2017.

Carlotta Bailly Borg — Mammals, 2019. Each has been dropped, fired and had faces etched into the surface.

Nairy Baghramian — George, 2017. Folded and squashed into a cold glass vitrine, the materials, sum the impression of a medicalised examination of an intestinal tract, the interior made exterior.

Renee So — Figures and Vessels, 2019. She responds to pre Colombian funerary vessels morphing into women's bodies.

Marie Lund — The Falling, 2020. The change in size and context of these familiar and banal objects makes them seem unfamiliar and strange. They bring attention to spaces that one might otherwise take no notice of.

Becky Beasley — Gloss, 2007.

Theaster Gates — Sound Cube, 2019. An electric organ first manufactured in Chicago in 1935. The cube structure creates an intense focus on the organ, opening out its canonical role in forming a black aesthetic.
