Objects, Value, Values

Values can be defined as broad preferences concerning appropriate courses of actions or outcomes. As such, values reflect a person's sense of right and wrong or what "ought" to be.

What's your definition of value?

I define values as a set of strong beliefs which guide a person's life.

"Nothing can have value without being an object of utility" Karl Marx

What does this phrase mean? Do you think this is true or untrue? What are your reasons?

What I understand from what Karl said is that nothing apart from a handmade or manufactured object has any value, therefore cannot be used.

Nonetheless, I have a different opinion. I see a purpose/utility in every object that surrounds us. For example, the photographs even if they do not seem to mean too much, they represent memories and thus, a sentimental value.

The value of a commodity can be objectively measured by the average number of labour hours required to produce that commodity.

Do you think this is true? Why have you taken this view?

If it comes to price value, I agree with him. For example, if you sew a dress by hand, it will take you more hours to do it than doing it with a sewing machine.

What I understand is that anything has a value, but it depends on the needs in that current situation. The examples were the water and the diamond.

On one hand, when you are thirsty, even though you hold a diamond, which is known to cost a great fortune, will not help you temper the thirst. What you need is actually water, because water is vital.

On the other hand, even though the diamond cannot really be used in many domains, it values a lot. When you are in need of money, even though you have water, that will not make you rich. Instead, when exchanging a diamond, it can help you gain a lot of money.

Overall, anything has a purpose and can bring a benefit, but it just depends on the situation.

What I get from that sentence is that design needs to embody all ideas from the people that are going to use it or living in it. I agree with him. Designers need to get to know the person(es) for whom they create because they have to create a space that fits clients demands. Design is about seeing, feeling, touching, almost everything.
